Robert Steven Tanner was born Feb 6,
1961 at Beckley, WV.
He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High
School Class of 1978.
He received his Bachelor's Degree in
Criminal Justice at Bluefield State in 1981
and began his law enforcement career in
December of 1981 as a patrol officer with
the Raleigh County Sheriff's Department.
Serving every position and attaining all
ranks at the sheriff's department possible
he was appointed Chief of Detectives in
2000 and Chief Deputy in late June 2006.
In 2008, he ran for sheriff of Raleigh
County and won. He secured a second
term as sheriff in the 2012 election.

Steve Tanner transcribed the tape of the
secret recordings himself (By Chief Deputy
Tanner- Doc 78) before he was Sheriff in
2008 and while still Chief Deputy..The
defendant’s lawyers used his version of the
tape recording in their motions to preclude
reference to or evidence concerning tape
recording conversations between the
defendants. He then lied in his Direct
Examination on Aug 10, 2010 when he said
he learned of the tape recordings only a few
hours prior to that. He also referred to the
transcript as 78 pages. His version was 78
pages. Harris Reporting’s version was 90
pages.
The judge apparently did not notice or
turned her head to the fact that Tanner had
transcribed the tape himself and the
attorneys used his version in their motions
instead of the legal transcription done by
Harris Reporting.

Why did he change brass to glass?
Why did he need directions to Cabell Heights Road?
Why did he call it "his scene" on the 911 tape?
